A diffuser is an aerodynamic device at the rear of a car which helps to generate downforce.

Diffusers have a characteristic upswept shape which ensures that air passing under the car maintains its speed while expanding to fill a widening gap. This reduces the pressure of the air, sucking the rear of the car down. It also increases the speed of air flow under the car – which itself generates more downforce.
