A head-up display or HUD projects information such as vehicle speed onto the inside surface of the windscreen. The figures appear to 'float' within the driver's view of the road (above). A head-up display allows the driver to receive information without looking down at the instruments.

Head-up displays were first used in fighter aircraft and were developed for automotive use in the 1990s.
