Strictly speaking ABS refers specifically to the original Bosch Anti-Blockier-System, introduced on the Mercedes-Benz S-class in 1978.
Anti-lock braking has become steadily more widely adopted since the 1980s, and is now fitted to most new cars in Europe and the US.
