Gull-wing doors are top hinged and open upwards.
The name comes from the shape made when the doors are open, which to some people resembles a bird's wings. In French they are known as portes papillons or 'butterfly doors'.
The most famous example of gull-wing doors on a road car was the 1955 Mercedes 300SL, and Mercedes have incorporated gull-wing doors into the SLS.
