A parallel hybrid is a vehicle which combines an internal combustion engine and a battery-powered electric motor, either of which can drive the wheels directly.
In a parallel hybrid the electric motor is used for low-speed running, and the internal combustion engine takes over at higher speeds or when the battery is exhausted. The engine and motor may operate together to provide extra power for acceleration.
