An old term for rear-hinged doors. They were common on early cars, but front-hinged doors were considered safer and gradually replaced them.

Thanks to the universal fitment of safety belts the safety concerns over rear-hinged doors are no longer valid, and they have made a comeback on cars such as the Mazda RX8 and Vauxhall/Opel Meriva.
